Come Join Us for the Annual Marion County Fair! by Cale Harris

Come join us at the Marion County Fair in Salem, Illinois. There are tons of exciting rides and activities for any age to enjoy. Bring a little money for fair food, carnival games, and rides.  Rides are going from 5-11 pm.  There are also grandstand activities that cost a little extra, but will be well worth it.

There are many rides and carnival games at the fair. The Twister is a local favorite In this ride, three people can sit together and be spun around in circles repeatedly. Another great ride is the Tornado Rider. During this ride, you are standing up and get spun in circles quickly while the ride moves up and down.  Super Swings are another ride at the fair.  The swings move around in a circle while flying up and down.  Many people can enjoy this ride at one time. It is a great one to ride with friends and family!

On Friday night, you will not want to miss the demolition derby. It is where you take an old beat up car and drive it into other cars repeatedly. The last car still running is the winner! The driver of the winning car wins money.  The demo derby is loud and crazy!  It is a giant game of bumper cars but faster and muddier.

Tractor pulls are also a big event at the Marion County Fair.  Large, loud tractors try to pull weighted sleds about 300 feet or the length of the track. The drivers with the most powerful tractors win prize money.  People come from miles around and even different states to compete and to watch tractor pulls.

Don’t forget to bring a few extra bucks for fair food!  The food trucks will make and serve hundreds of funnel cakes, corn dogs, and lemon shake-ups.  Homemade ice cream, saltwater taffy and many other common treats can be found.  There is surely something for everyone.

The Motocross is one of my favorite events at the fair. In this they race ATVs or dirt bikes around a dirt track that has all kinds of jumps and bumps.  The drivers have to get through the course as quickly as possible.  The races are loud, competitive, and might even include some unfortunate crashes!  This is one of the most exciting events of fair week.  Many people enjoy watching these races.  Make  sure you get there early so you get a good seat.

In conclusion, there are many rides, games, food and activities that you can enjoy at the Marion County Fair. You won’t leave without a smile on your face! There is something for everyone.  Don’t miss the Marion County Fair at the fairgrounds on Route 37 South in Salem, Illinois.
